The Art of the Sword

Iaido (pronounced ee-eye-do), is the traditional martial art of Japanese swordsmanship. Iaido evolved from battlefield techniques of feudal Japan into the modern system practiced today. Students learn how to draw and cut with the Japanese sword through various pre-determined forms, or kata. These forms are practiced solo, but in a group setting along with other students. Practice is meditative but through the repetition of these ancient forms, sound movement, poise, and a rigorous workout can be achieved .

Enrollment in Raleigh Aikikai’s
Iaido program is limited primarily to those who already practice Aikido, and prospective students must interview with the chief instructor prior to admittance.
However, there are a limited number of positions in the program for those who only wish to study Iaido.

We are currently accepting students for the Iaido program. If you are interested in becoming a member, the process is similar to our Aikido program membership. Please note - only the Wednesday Iaido class is open to observation by prospective members.
